Compatibility

The SecondCopy tape backup application was developed to provide users with a secure second copy of the data on their hard drives. One of the design goals was that it run on most of the computers used in the Linux community. The hardware in this package was chosen because it can read and write QIC format media. The application will allow most Linux installations to save and restore data.

This application runs on ISA, EISA, and PCI bus computers with the 2.0.30 versions of the Linux operating system, while those computers are running other applications. Tape cartridges for Tandberg drives are available in 250 megabyte to 26 gigabyte capacities. Automated cartridge changers are available with capacities to 1.2 terabytes. Multiple tapes can be used, files can cross tape boundaries, and files can be larger than the tape cartridges.

The Tandberg TDC 3500, 3700, 4122, 4222, SLR-5, and MLR-1 tape drives can, optionally, compress data before it is written to a tape. Compressed tapes can only be verified and restored by a tape drive with this capability. Compressed tapes are not readable by the TDC 3820, 4120, and 4220 tape drives.
