Operating Requirements

In order to use SecondCopy, you will need the items listed under What Was Shipped and:

• a PC running Linux 2.0.30 (Red Hat version 5.2) or later,
• 512K free memory,
• 512K hard disk space,
• a correctly installed SCSI controller,
• a correctly installed tape drive,
• a minimum of three blank tape cartridges,
• a superuser login id,
• and a period of time in which the hard disk will be idle.

Here is generalized list of cartridges that work with three types of Tandberg tape drives. However, it is important to check the reference manual for your specific drive and use only the tapes that Tandberg recommends.

• The list of cartridges that work with the 5.25" form factor Tandberg tape drives is: DC615, DC600A, DC6150, DC6250, DC6525, DC9100, DC9200, and other 45,000 ftpi tapes.
• The list of cartridges that work with the 3.5" form factor Tandberg TDC 3500 is: MC3000, MC3000XL, and QW3000.
• The list of cartridges that work with the 3.5" form factor Tandberg TDC 3700 is: QWX3210XL.

The examples in this manual use the programs "ps", "tar", "cat", "ls", "find", and "cron". These programs are not required to operate the SecondCopy software but are highly recommended. They can be found on the operating system distribution disks or web sites.

The superuser id is needed to perform a small number of backup and restore operations. In general, one only needs superuser status when manipulating other people's files. The examples which follow will indicate when the superuser status is needed.
